About

Virginia Beach Symphony was written as a musical portrait of the city through four interconnected movements, each reflecting a defining aspect of its identity. The work traces the quiet permanence of the Atlantic Ocean, the vibrant energy of the Town Center, and the rural life of the southern Pungo region. A spoken setting of Claudia Emerson’s poem Stable emerges late in the third movement, offering an elegiac reflection on memory, change, and the passage of time within the landscape. The symphony concludes with a tribute to the U.S. Navy, evoking the sensation of flight inspired by the F/A-18 Super Hornets that are a constant presence over Virginia Beach. Together, the movements form a sonic portrait shaped by place, history, and lived experience.
